Troubleshooting QuickTime on YAVarsity.com

Several of the web pages on YAVarsity.com include the use of QuickTime audio and video media. In order to view these clips or listen to live streaming audio, you will need to have the QuickTime Player from Apple on your computer. If you have never used QuickTime on your computer, we have created this page to help you get started.

About QuickTime
Your Windows-based computer must have the most recent version of QuickTime software to operate properly. QuickTime is available in two forms: QuickTime Player and QuickTime Pro. QuickTime Player is a free, downloadable application that allows you to view QuickTime multimedia on your computer. QuickTime Pro is a paid upgrade which unlocks media creation and editing functions to QuickTime Player. It is only necessary for you to download the free QuickTime Player to view multimedia on your computer. If you do not have QuickTime installed, visit the QuickTime download page.

Streaming Media
Streaming media on YAVarsity.com involves delivery of audio or video data over a network in real-time, as a stream of packets instead of a single file download.

Installation and Set-Up
For Macintosh computers
For Windows computers

QuickTime streaming can be affected by firewalls on personal computers. If you suspect that your firewall is preventing access to streaming audio, use the QuickTime Preferences to set the transport to HTTP using port 80. This should solve most firewall issues. This is explained in detail below.

Windows System Requirements
To install QuickTime Player and listen to streaming audio, your Windows machine must meet the following requirements:
• Pentium processor-based PC or compatible computer
• At least 128MB of RAM
• Windows 98/Me/2000/XP
The audio delivered from YAVarsity.com requires that the 'Auto-Play' function of the QuickTime browser plug-in is activated. This setting can be confirmed through these steps:
• Go to 'Start', then 'Settings, and select 'Control Panel'.
• In the 'Control Panel', select 'QuickTime'.
• From the QuickTime settings drop down menu, select 'Browser Plug-In'.
• Select 'Play movies automatically'.

Updating your QuickTime
If you already have QuickTime Player on your computer but are not sure if it is the latest version, there is an easy way to both check and upgrade at the same time without downloading an entirely new version:
1. Be sure that you are connected to the Internet.
2. With the QuickTime Player open, go to the Help pull down menu.
3. Select the Update Existing Software tab.
4. You should see a button labeled Check for update now. Clicking this button will check to see that your system has the latest version of QuickTime.
5. If you have the latest version, a system prompt will tell you so. If you don't, the prompt will give you the option to download the necessary updates.

Troubleshooting QuickTime and Windows Firewall

Firewalls and QuickTime Streaming Media Ports
QuickTime streams are typically transported via the RTP/RTSP protocol, but many firewalls (including the Windows XP Service Pack 2 firewall) block these protocols. Should you wish to open your firewall to the RTP/RTSP protocols, you need to do the following:
• Open port 554 for RTSP/TCP data
• Open ports 6970 through 6999 (inclusive) for RTP/UDP data.
These ports settings can be changed in 'Control Panel > Security Center':
• At the bottom of this dialogue box, select 'Windows Firewall' from the 'Manage Security Settings'.
• Click on the 'Exceptions' tab, and continue to select 'Add Port'. Proceed to add the ports and port information specific to QuickTime that is listed above.

If your QuickTime has already been updated, port settings implemented, and you are still having streaming issues when using QuickTime, please try the following:

Windows Firewall - Fix A
• From the Start menu, select Control Panel.
• In the Control Panel, find and double click the icon for the 'QuickTime'.
• From the top drop-down menu in the QuickTime control panel, select 'Streaming Transport'
• Change the radio button selection to 'Use this Protocol and Port ID', and verify that the subsequent selection is 'Use HTTP Port: 80'.
• Select 'OK'

Windows Firewall - Fix B
Alternatively, you can grant the QuickTime player an exception, but media embedded in browsers will still encounter problems and must be granted a similar exception.
To allow QuickTime to play within the firewall:
• From the Start menu, select Control Panel.
• In the Control Panel, find and double click the icon for the 'Security Center'. In the 'Security Center', under 'Manage Security Settings': select 'Windows Firewall' on the bottom.
• Find and Select the 'Exceptions' tab. If QuickTime is present, check it. If not, you can add the program to the exceptions list.
• To add to the exceptions list: Within 'Exceptions', find and select the 'Add Programs' button near the bottom of the window. In the scroll window, browse to 'QuickTime Player' and select 'OK'. This adds QuickTime Player as an acceptable application and an exception to some firewall settings. Remember - if QuickTime is being used within a browser, the browser must be added as an exception as well.
• To exit and complete, select 'OK' in the 'Windows Firewall' window.

Macintosh System Requirements
To install QuickTime Player and listen to streaming audio, your Mac must meet the following requirements:
• G4 processor or better
• At least 128MB of RAM
• Mac OS X 10.3 operating system or better

Troubleshooting QuickTime and Firewalls

• With QuickTime Player open, select QuickTime Preferences from the QuickTime Player pull down menu
• Click the Streaming tab. Select your connection speed from the pull down menu. Also click on Enable Instant-On and set it to a short delay
• Next click the Advanced tab. From the Transport Setup pull down menu, choose Custom. Set Transport Protocol to HTTP and click the Port 80 button. Click OK
